Significance & Context
Merdeka Square (or Independence Square) is a vast green lawn that holds immense historical significance. It's where the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag was raised for the first time. The 95-meter flagpole is one of the tallest in the world.
What to See & Do
- Sultan Abdul Samad Building: The most impressive building on the square, with its copper domes and clock tower, formerly housing the superior courts.
- Royal Selangor Club: A Tudor-style social club on the edge of the square.
- Kuala Lumpur City Gallery: Look for the iconic "I ❤️ KL" structure for a great photo op.
📸 Photo Opportunity
The best photos are from the center of the lawn, looking back at the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.
